Study abroad is an integral part of learning languages at Milton Academy and an ideal complement to the classroom experience. With total immersion, students not only build upon the language they have acquired at Milton, but also come face to face with the cultures they have studied in the classroom. In short, students discover the true soul of a country. They gain in confidence and grow in appreciation of another culture. Immersion in a totally different surrounding opens their eyes, and the students assimilate a new way of living and looking at the world. For many, their time abroad is a defining experience in their lives.
This year will mark the 39th anniversary of Milton’s French Exchange Program. Students in Class II or III who are in their second year of French or beyond may apply. Each Milton student is paired with a student from the Lycée Georges Duby, and during the group’s May/June stay in Aix, lives with that student’s family, sharing French family life. During the day, classes are coupled with a program of cultural experiences and historical visits. When the group from the Lycée comes to Milton, students will act as host to their exchange counterparts. French students stay two weeks in April, attend classes at Milton, and participate in various school activities. Boarding students are responsible for finding a host family for their French counterpart. The deadline for applications is October 26, 2015.
The Spanish Exchange is a school-to-school program initiated in 1979. It runs jointly with Colegio El Pilar, a private school in Madrid. The group travels with two faculty members to Spain at the beginning of June and welcomes the Spanish group to Milton Academy in September. Students are paired with students from El Pilar, and during the four weeks of the stay in Spain, students will live with their counterparts’ family, sharing in all of their activities and attending school during the week. Students will also visit many amazing historical and cultural sites in Madrid and surrounding areas. This is a wonderful opportunity to improve Spanish skills and to experience the rich culture of Spain. Since this is an exchange program, students will act as a host to their Spanish counterparts during the month of September. The Spanish students will live with students’ families, attend classes at Milton, and participate in school activities. Boarding students will be responsible for finding a host family for their Spanish guests. The deadline for applications is November 15, 2015.
