The Milton Measure, Milton Academy’s official school newspaper, is the oldest student-written and student-managed publication on campus, published bi-weekly since 1894. In this year’s nine issues, the paper has covered a range of topics including faculty sabbaticals, the boys’ soccer team’s historic success, student views on the college process, and sustainability on campus.
“The newspaper staff this year is a dedicated group of student journalists,” says Liz Matson, advisor to the paper. “They take a thoughtful and thorough approach to their reporting, writing and editing. I’ve been very impressed with their work ethic.”
The Measure publishes four sections: News, Opinion, Arts & Entertainment, and Sports. The newspaper’s three-pronged policy and mission statement is “to present current events to the Milton Academy community objectively and with integrity; to reflect and disseminate the community’s values and opinions; and to create a safe forum for discussion at Milton Academy.”
The newspaper is structured into three divisions: the editorial board, the section editors and the writing staff. The editorial board manages the production schedule, writes editorials, edits articles for clarity, and ties up loose ends before publishing day. The CXXI editorial board’s editors-in-chief are Jonathan Chan (I) and Sophia Cloherty (I); managing editor is Aeshna Chandra (I); layout editor is Jacob Aronoff (I), web editor is Christopher Bucci (I), and senior editors are: Hannah Nigro (I), Eliza Scharfstein (I), Sarah Ford (I), and Trevor Hopkins (I). The two section editors for each of the four sections decide on article topics, edit, and assign articles to the writing staff. More than 80 students regularly contribute to the publication. An annual tradition is collaborating with The Milton Paper to publish the Shallot, a joint humor issue.
