All class III and IV students fanned out across Milton and Greater Boston for Community Engagement Day on Wednesday, October 16. Students participated in outdoor clean-ups, helped at the Greater Boston Food Bank, visited with senior citizens, volunteered at an animal shelter, and helped in Boston Public School classrooms, among other activities.

“Our students did a whole range of work, from elder care to farm work to outdoor clean-up tasks, including at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton and the Neponset River watershed,” says Andrea Geyling-Moore, director of Community Engagement Programs and Partnerships (CEPP). “They went out in their advisories, and it’s a nice bonding activity for these groups.”

Also this month, weekly service through CEPP began, with more than 200 students participating in weekly commitments at different sites throughout Greater Boston. The student Community Engagement board is planning several activities for the rest of the semester, including a Halloween candy collection drive—candy will be donated to veterans—a hunger awareness day in the Upper School’s dining hall, and a holiday toy drive to benefit local children in need.

Plans are underway for a spring break trip to Puerto Rico, where students will participate in a variety of service activities, including joining efforts to rebuild after damage from 2017’s Hurricane Maria. Students will be required to apply to participate in the trip.
