New faculty gathered virtually in mid-summer with members of the Upper School Deans’ Office. “It was so amazing and inspiring!” said Academic Dean Heather Sugrue. “I’m excited about all of these people joining the School.”

Mahmoud Abdalrahman joins the Science Department. He earned his bachelor’s in chemistry at Clark University and his Ph.D. in bioinorganic chemistry at the University of New Hampshire. His graduate work focused on environmental sensors and cancer imaging. He comes to Milton from St. John’s School in Houston, Texas, where he taught chemistry. 

Akinade Adeboye joins the faculty of the Math Department. He has a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from Covenant University in Nigeria and master’s in educational leadership from Southern New Hampshire University. Prior to Milton, Adeboye taught math at both Austin Preparatory School and St. Johnsbury Academy, where he also served as an advisor and dorm proctor.

Aprotim “Cory” Bhowmik joins the Math Department. He has a master’s degree in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education where his focus was on computational neuroscience in learning and education. He also has a M.S. in biomedical engineering from Columbia University and a B.S. in electrical engineering from Stanford University. His academic research focused on machine learning, signal processing, and neuroscience.

LeeAnn Brash joins the Math faculty as the Math Department chair. She graduated with a mathematics degree from Harvard University, completed a post-baccalaureate program in music at Wellesley College and then earned a master’s in computer science at Dartmouth College. She was also a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. She comes to Milton from the Cambridge School of Weston, where she taught all levels of high school math and built the computer science curriculum. 

Melody Guan joins the Modern Languages Department as a Chinese teacher. She earned a bachelor’s of education in Chinese language and literature from Anhui Normal University in China, a master’s degree in project management from Sejong University in South Korea and a bachelor’s degree in international trade from Northeastern University. Guan has worked as a program coordinator for the ASC School A+ Program in Boston and as a Chinese teacher for Chungdahm Learning in Seoul, South Korea.

Hubert Hwang will be a faculty member in the Math Department. He earned a bachelor’s in science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a master’s in math education at Boston University. He was a math teacher at Academy of the Pacific Rim and Mystic Valley Regional Charter School. He has worked with student STEM Clubs, and coached students participating in the Massachusetts Science Olympiad.

Noah Knopf joins the History and Social Sciences Department as a teaching fellow in the University of Pennsylvania Resident Masters in Teaching program. He graduated with a bachelor’s in American history and literature from Harvard University. He has interned at the East Harlem School and the Loomis Chaffee Summer Program. 

Billie Pennington will join the Science Department. She earned her bachelor’s degree in anatomical sciences at the University of Edinburgh and a master’s degree in science education at The University of Texas, Austin. Pennington taught physics at McCallum High School and the St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, both in Austin. She has also served as a dorm parent, and coached volleyball and field hockey.

Joshua Quinones will join the English faculty. He earned a bachelor’s in art history and a bachelor’s in political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also earned a master’s in teaching (secondary English) from Brown University. He is currently working on his master’s in English from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College. Prior to Milton, Quinones taught English at Cushing Academy and the Wheeler School. He has experience as a dorm parent and has worked with student theater and singing groups.

Carolina Rojas joins the Science Department as a teaching fellow in the University of Pennsylvania Resident Masters in Teaching program. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and educational studies. Rojas has worked as a peer leader and mentor to high school students.

Lainey Sloman will be the new Director of Academic Support. She has a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and M.S.Ed. in teaching students with disabilities from Brooklyn College​. Prior to Milton, she was director of learning services and learning specialist at the Inly School​ in Scituate, Massachusetts, and a learning specialist and instructional coach at Winston Preparatory School​ in New York City. She has worked with elementary through high school-aged students with diverse learning needs and cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
