In the 2022–2023 school year, Milton welcomes 16 new faculty members and staff, additions to academic departments across the Upper School as well as the Athletics Department and the Department of Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ).

Andrea Abarca Coutts joins the Visual Arts Department. Abarca Coutts received her bachelor’s degree in drawing, book and paper arts with a minor in art history from Tufts University, a master’s degree in community arts education from the Rhode Island School of Design, a post-baccalaureate certificate in painting from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, and a master’s degree in drawing from UMass-Dartmouth. Her teaching experience includes roles at Massasoit Community College, Roger Williams University, the Rhode Island School of Design, and others.  

Hannah Antonellis joins the History & Social Science Department as a teaching fellow in the University of Pennsylvania Resident Masters in Teaching Program. Antonellis is a graduate of Williams College, where she received her bachelor’s degree in history with a concentration in leadership studies. She joins Milton from the Groton School, where she was a U.S. history fellow, dance instructor, and dorm affiliate. In addition to her bachelor’s degree, Antonellis has studied American History at Christ’s College at the University of Cambridge. 

Emma Bradford joins the Computer Science Department. Bradford is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, where they received their bachelor of science degree in computer science and a bachelor of arts in anthropology. They have experience as a teaching assistant at the University of Cincinnati, as well as Chongqing University and Barrington High School in Illinois, in addition to being a lesson plan developer for the DreamGirls Initiative and a full stack developer for Refract Labs. 

Jeanna Cook joins the Classics Department. Cook received her bachelor’s degree in classics from Davidson College, her M.Ed. in curriculum and training from the Boston University School of Education, and her master’s in classics, Latin, and Greek from the Graduate School of the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences at Boston College. Cook has taught at Noble & Greenough School, Phillips Exeter Academy, St. Mark’s School, the Haileybury School in Melbourne, Australia, and the Moses Brown School. She has participated in archaeological digs researching 1st-century Roman structures in Lucca, Italy, and Binchester, England. 

Marie Deslauriers joins the Upper School Deans’ Office as the administrative coordinator. Deslauriers comes to Milton from Babson College, where she served as governance affairs manager. Prior to Babson, she worked for 10 years at the Massachusetts School Building Authority as an assistant project manager and administrator of the designer selection panel, with prior roles as an administrative assistant and executive assistant. She has her bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies from Suffolk University. 

Nicolette Gable joins the History & Social Science Department. Gable comes to Milton from the Academy at Penguin Hall, where she was a humanities teacher. Gable received her bachelor’s degree in history from Haverford College, and her master’s and Ph.D., both in American studies, from the College of William & Mary. She has experience teaching at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, University of Massachusetts-Boston, Wheaton College, and William & Mary. 

Marvin Gutierrez is the Upper School’s first dean of faculty. Gutierrez comes to Milton from the Boston Public Schools, where he was principal of the James P. Timilty Middle School. He previously taught mathematics at the Cambridge School of Weston, where he also served as a teacher coach; additionally, Gutierrez has taught at the English High School in Boston, Brighton High School, the Boston Day and Evening Academy, and in the Baltimore Public Schools. He received bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and secondary education from the University of Rhode Island, a master’s in science education from Boston University, and a master’s in learning science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Randall Hesse joins the Science Department. Hesse comes to Milton from the Brooks School, where he worked for nearly 20 years; his roles included teaching physics, chemistry, and robotics, chairing the science department, coaching varsity football and varsity girls’ lacrosse, and serving as a dorm parent. Hesse received his bachelor’s degree from Williams College. He previously taught at Haverford School, the Lawrenceville School, and Lancaster Country Day School. 

Bilal Hussain joins the Computer Science Department. Hussain previously worked as a software developer and research assistant at the Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study and lead software engineer at Healthynox, and held student web developer and IT coordinator roles at Harvard University. He received his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Harvard. 

Maverick Jacobs joins the Department of Equity, Inclusion, and Justice. Jacobs comes to Milton from the Christ School in Arden, North Carolina, where he was an integrated science and biology teacher and diversity, equity, and inclusion coordinator. Jacobs has also worked as a campus pastor apprentice through the Elevation Church in Asheville. He received his bachelor’s degree in biology and secondary education from Gordon College. 

Lou Kinder joins the English Department. Kinder comes to Milton from Northfield Mount Hermon School, where she taught English, served as an advisor, and was the head rowing coach. Kinder previously taught at the College Preparatory School, North Shore Country Day School, and Deerfield Academy and was an assistant rowing coach at the University of California-Berkeley, which won NCAA national championships in 2016 and 2018. She received her bachelor’s degree in English literature from UC-Berkeley, and her master’s in English literature from the Middlebury Bread Loaf School of English. 

Matthew McDonald joins the Math Department. McDonald comes to Milton from the Fay School, where he was chair of the mathematics department, an upper school teacher, advisor, varsity hockey coach, and dorm parent. He previously worked at the New Canaan Country School and the Taft School. McDonald received his bachelor’s degree in psychology and mathematics from Hamilton College and his master’s degree in teaching from Manhattanville College. 

David Nurenberg joins the English Department. He previously taught English at Concord-Carlisle Regional High School for more than 20 years, where he developed and ran the school’s world literature program, senior project program, and Japanese and Turkmen exchange programs. He has also worked as a professor in the Graduate School of Education at Lesley University. Nuremberg received his bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University, his master’s in English and American literature from Tufts University, and his Ph.D. in educational studies from Lesley. 

Katherine Vamosi joins the Athletics Department as an assistant athletic trainer. Vamosi received her bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Westfield State University. Her work experience includes serving as a lifeguard and children’s swim instructor at the Easton Old Colony YMCA and as a patient access coordinator and emergency department clinical assistant at Good Samaritan Steward Hospital in Brockton. She also has athletic training clinical experience at the college and high school levels. 

Anika Walker-Johnson is the first director of residential life. Walker-Johnson comes to Milton from Germantown Academy, where she was the director of equity and inclusion and an English instructor. Previously, she worked for 17 years at Tabor Academy, where she held roles as an English teacher, dean of multicultural education and community life, associate director of admission for multicultural recruitment, residential advisor, student advisor, class advisor, and community service program coordinator. Walker-Johnson has a bachelor’s degree in African American studies and English literature from Emory University, and her M.S.Ed. in school leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. 

Yuxin (Hans) Zhou joins the Classics Department as a teaching fellow in the University of Pennsylvania Resident Masters in Teaching Program. Zhou is a graduate of Pomona College, where he received his bachelor’s degree in environmental analysis and classics. He also studied at the University of Washington College of the Environment as a Doris Duke Conservation Scholar. Zhou comes to Milton from AcadeMe, an education startup in Beijing, where he was a teaching fellow.
